Top Case Fan Vent Question

I have to buy an external drive to go with my computer. I was thinking of making a casing for it and mounting it to the grills on the top of the case. Would this hurt temperature and ventilation?

yes. you will likely add heat to the hdd aswell

anything sitting on top of a vent will block it. also anything sitting on the vent will be subject to the heat your case pushes out.
so regardless of the drive yes. it will hurt temps and ventilation.

why cant you mount the drive inside your 5&3/4 bays?

i will try to mount it, but internal ones that use sata connections aren't working for me for some reason

which motherboard do you have and are you trying to connect to the sata or E-sata as some boards have both (usually designated different colours)
