Toshiba HD crash..?

My wife opened her Dell laptop today and it said 'no bootable devices'. I ran the built-in diagnostics and it said the hard drive was not working. It is a TOshiba 500Gb MQ01ABF050
I pulled it out and hooked it up via SATA-USB to my notebook. It spins up, I get the Windows "ding-dong!" recognition, a D: drive shows up in Explorer, but then nothing. No folders show up and I can't access the drive at all.
How can I access the folders on teh HD so I can get data off?

Looks like it may be too late to get any data off it, short of using a data recovery service.

That's why keeping data backed up on another drive is so important, which I assume hasn't been done.

Just to add, it also shows up under disc management with all the partitions (although it takes a while to show up)
