I brought my laptop in to get repaired and they gave me a $400 price tag to repair the motherboard. The laptop turns on and after a few seconds shuts down, nothing appears on the screen. My question is should I repair the laptop or get a new one? Also, if I sell it for parts how can I make sure someone doesn't get all of my info that I currently have on the laptop? Thanks!

Info is stored on the hard drive only.

You would save a lot of money if you could replace the board yourself. If you can't do that, then you would be better off getting a new one.

I wouldn't spend $400 on a repair, as other parts are likely to fail too.

Take the HDD out, get your data off it and then run DBAN on it when the drive is attached to another working computer -- it is freeware and you can download it from HERE. Just be careful to nuke the correct drive!
