I have an hp elitebook 8470p. It came with 4gb of ram and supports up to 16gb. I put in another 4gb stick today and it shows 8gb installed but only shows 2.96gb in the total memory and 2.07gb in available. Is this right or should it be higher?
Yeah sounds like a windows 32bit issue. If running 32bit only 4gb is usable, including your vram (thus the difference you are seeing, likely). Make sure your are running windows 64bit.

Is your windows 32 bit? And its better if you install a ram which matches your existing one to avoid any compatibility issues.
Peace.
I just put in a matching stick and it says the same thing. The os is 32 bit. The laptop originally came with windows 7 pro but someone put windows 7 enterprise on it.
