Hi there,

I want to buy the TP-LINK TL-WN722N for using with Backtrack5 or Kali, but the problem is that they put different chipsets for the same model, and I want the one with the AR9271 chipset because I hear it's compatible with BT5 and Kali.

So, How could I tell the chipset number from the hardware version number for that specific model ? or what hardware version of that model that is fully compatible with BT5 or Kali ?

Thanks in Advance

Are you sure there are multiple models.

The way that always works is to verify the FCC id if you can look at the box. If they would change something as major as the wireless chipset they would have to re certify.

This site has lots of the information extracted from the FCC databases but you can go dig yourself if you think there are multiple devices. It takes a little practice on the fcc site but all the tplink devices all start with the same numbers.....tplink you will still likely get many hundreds of hits with as many products as they make.

Thanks so much bill001g, I didn't know about FCC, that really helped me a lot figuring out many things . and you're right, the mentioned adapter has only one chip AR9271 .. but let me be a little more greedy and ask you :

1. I believe the FCC ID is a unique number but HERE I found two entries !!
2. Does the FCC provide chip model info, I tried to search but got nothing ?

Thanks again

Not sure why there are multiple entries in some of these. Most times all the links internal to the entries link to the same document numbers. I have one time found different external photos when they were selling the same product under a OEM brand name.

I normally am lazy and use the wikidev page to search for equipment that uses which chips. I would have to read the wikidev site to figure out how they are getting this but I suspect someone is manually reading the reports on the FCC sites and creating the wikidev entries. Unless you pretty much know what you are looking for the fcc site is hard find things.
