The pin configuration of this TPM matches my
motherboard, but my motherboard has a plastic raised border around the pins which blocks the TPM chipboard from fitting in its place. I could take a pair of needle nose pliers and break the border so that the TPM will fit, but I don't know if that's wise. Should I try
to find another TPM online that will fit instead?

I have a gigabyte z590 motherboard and the TPM is a
NewHail TPM2.0 Module TPM SP1 12Pin Module with
infineon SLB 9670 for Gigabyte Motherboard.

Are you adding this TPM for something besides Win 11 compatibility? Because you don't need a separate module for that, there is a setting in BIOS that will enable the TPM on your CPU which is all Windows needs.
