Question trackpad not clicking - Dell XPS 15 7590

Hi, I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to hardware repair. The trackpad is not clicking. From the little research I've done so far, this is usually because there is some dust or food blocking the trackpad from making contact with the "button" underneath.

But I think I'm having a different issue. The trackpad seems to be in CONSTANT contact with the button, and doesn't spring back, so when the laptop is in the upright position, the trackpad is already touching the button, so it's already "clicked". When I turn the laptop upside down, and gravity moves the trackpad away from the button, then I can click it just fine.

So I hoping someone can point me in the direction of a fix, perhaps by explaining how these trackpads are supposed to work? Is there some electromagnet or something that keeps the trackpad away from the button normally .. ?

Here's a link to a couple of photos: and
The first one shows there is a gap between the trackpad and the button, and the second shows the laptop upside down, with my finger pushing UP on the button to click.

Any help appreciated 🙏

One immediate observation:

That metal implement being used to manipulate the button appears to be touching the solder points on the underlaying circuit board.

Not sure about the connections/connectivity but if the laptop trackpad was powered on then you may have shorted something out. Or even caused some capacitor to discharge where it should not.

As for the button, the metal m(?) strip may be suffering from fatigue and not properly making or ending contact as it should.

My thought is that that strip may be replacable by removing the screws at each end.

Not sure about what may be underneath. Nor would I rule out some failure with respect to the button itself.

Just my thoughts on the matter.
