Transfering data from old laptop HD

Hi,
This may be a stupid question, but I'm a bit of a a noob
My laptop recently died so I pulled out the HD and bought a SATA-to-USB cable with hopes of rescuing the data. When plugging it into a USB port on my other laptop the HD "revs up" but does not show up in the explorer. Do I need to do something else or is this a too esy solution to my problem?

It normally depends on what sata to usb cable you have. You may end up having to plug the hard drive directly to the motherboard.Also make sure that the Windows is supported by the cable. What SATA to USB cable did you use?

I bought a cheap one from China, so it's a likely culprit
Could you suggest what I should buy?
