Transfering information to an ssd.

So Im getting the Samsung 860 Evo SSD for a new computer, and I don't want to buy windows again and download all my games and apps all over again that is on my regular HDD.

My question is, would it work if I temporarily install both the HDD and SSD, throw all the files from my HDD to my SDD including windows, then remove the HDD because its old and I don't need it anymore? or is it somehow more complicated than that?

Samsung provides software to clone your old disk into the Samsung SSD.

You don't just "throw" it.

Specific steps for a successful clone operation:

Verify the actual used space on the current drive is significantly below the size of the new SSD
Download and install Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration, if a Samsung SSD)
Power off
Disconnect ALL drives except the current C and the new SSD
Power up
Run the Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration)
Select ALL the partitions on the existing C drive
Click the 'Clone' button
Wait until it is done
When it finishes, power off
Disconnect ALL drives except for the new SSD
This is to allow the system to try to boot from ONLY the SSD
Swap the SATA cables around so that the new drive is connected to the same SATA port as the old drive
Power up, and verify the BIOS boot order
If good, continue the power up

It should boot from the new drive, just like the old drive.
Maybe reboot a time or two, just to make sure.

If it works, and it should, all is good.

Later, reconnect the old drive and wipe as necessary.

Oh boy If it only was that easy.. When you install windows 2 Windows The Same system The drivers Will get confused i would not recommend that unless you know What you are doing.

It is easier than that.

Use the Samsung ssd migration aid.
Download the instructions and app here:

It will copy your windows C drive to your new ssd.
Then simply boot from the ssd.
After, you can do what you wish with the HDD.

In the event that your new ssd can not hold all of the active portion of the C drive, you can exclude large data folders from the move.
They will still be available on the HDD later.

What are you referring to?
The cloning process or re-installing Windows process?

Cloning is very simple easy process, if you use the right tools for the task.
It could be a little different depending on the system profile (laptop, desktop, etc).

If you have a desktop with available ports to connect the new disk, is very simple nothing but the disk and cloning software.
If you have a laptop, then you might need to get a USB to SATA adapter to connect the new disk then proceed to the cloning process.
