Transferring data from old pc

I just built my first pc (windows 7). I took the hard drive from my last pc (windows xp) and installed it as a second hard drive so I could retrieve all of my old data. Some of the data I can retrieve easily (the stuff in shared docs etc). My problem is with accessing my personal files that were not sharable on my old pc. I had read somewhere that I needed to take ownership of the files. I tried that and still can't move any of the files to my new hd. Any suggestions as to what I can do? Thanks

how did you try to take ownership?

I tried the only way I knew how. Right click > properties > security > Advanced > owner > edit > select and apply. Even after doing that I still can't move the file to my new hd or even open pictures.

use the link i gave-- it lets me do it when the normal way doesnt work or when you get the file is in use error message as well
