Transferring files with firewire connections

We recently purchased a new laptop & I have only just noticed that it has a
firewire port. Since the PC also has firewire I was wondering it it's
possible to transfer video files or other types of files from one machine to
the other. If so would this work in both directions.

Maybe (depending on whether the operating systems on each
machine support it). You didn't mention whether the laptop
is a PC or Mac, and assuming the "PC" is actually a PC, but
dunno what operating system.

OTOH, far more likely that it would be both easier and cheaper
to use conventional network connection. You can use a "crossover"
cable (available for < 5 USD) to directly interconnect the two
network ports if you don't otherwise have a network.
