Transferring windows to a new pc

My old PC broke and I was wondering if I could use the hardrive with windows 7 on it in my new PC and save the money on buying a new OS.

It came with a disk and key which I can find somewhere but my new PC won't have a optical drive.

Would it still be possible to plug in the hardrive in the new PC and use that or would I have to suck it up and get a new version of windows?

If you bought the old machine with Windows pre-installed then it is not transferable and you will need to spring for a new license.
