Question Tried powering on - PSU out of voltage range

Hi, I just finished re-assembling my system and tried to power it on a couple of times, The Mobo LED and the Graphic card LED turned on when I switched on the PSU but the Power button was totally unresponsive.

Taking a closer look, I noticed that my PSU (Antec VP650P, which is from India) mentions an AC range of 200-240V, while I should be using a 110-120V PSU in Canada. Huge bummer that I didn't check this before.. and I'll go out and get a new PSU.

I'm hoping to confirm that powering on didn't damage any of the components or the PSU itself, even though the LEDs turned on?

Just install the new 120V PSU and try it. It's not possible to know of any damage with the description you've given and not knowing the internals of the 240V PSU.

You have looked for a voltage selection switch on the old PSU, correct?

Yes, there doesn't seem to be one. And it even says on the label that the operating range is 200-240V

Replace that PSU with one that has PFC and a voltage range of 100VAC to 240VAC, and you're set, no matter where you happen to go. An equivalent power output rating, in the Corsair RM line would be a good choice.

The RM series is about a whole $100 above my budget at the moment.

I was thinking of going for Corsair VS Series VS650 650 W Active PFC 80 PLUS White Certified Power Supply (CP-9020172-NA). Do you think there is any equivalent or better in the same price range?

DO NOT go with the VS series....it is generally considered to be VERY bad quality.

I would have to research more to see what is available that would better serve you, but I am late to get out and do my work. I can look at it later, this evening. (UTC-07)

Wow.. that's surprising. Coz it was recommended by a tech guy at a computer hardware store (of course, they could be trying to offload their stock), but mainly since there are generally positive 4+ reviews on Amazon, Newegg etc.

How about the EVGA 650 GQ?

Well, I would really appreciate it if you could suggest anything in the $100 range when you get time. Thanks!
