triple channel ram misuse

Dell put 4x 1gb ram sticks and 2x 2gb ram sticks in my triple channel (x2 for total of 6 slots) memory slots?... I just realized for the longest time Ive only been running on 4 GBs... when I reseated one of the ram sticks it jumped to 6gb. anyone here have triple channel and have had any success with using different ram combos that weren't triple channel?

You should install the two 2GB sticks on RAM slots with the same color.
