Troubleshooting ms pac man. coin-operated play does not work

Two questions:

1. I have an upright Ms. Pac Man. Is there any way I can get it into Attract mode on Free Play?
2. The game only seems to work when the pins are set to Free Play. When I switch the pins to coin play, the Attract-Mode screen comes up correctly. However, when I put a coin in, the screen goes blank, then goes back to the Attract-Mode screen.
