Question Troubleshooting old iMac

I have an OLD iMac, think first or second edition (the thick ones!) that I need to get up and running.

After a lengthy boot process and signing in to my account I am left with an empty desktop screen, no icons or launch bar!

Tried several times now.
Not sure what to try next.
Unwilling to let it become e-waste just yet.

Have you tried safe mode? Left shift key during start up.
