[SOLVED] Trying to access files from old laptop that died

I have an HDD that I pulled from a laptop that wouldn't boot to see if I could save the files on the hard drive.

I connected the drive via an external case to the USB drive on my desktop, and opened the drive to see the files. I can see all the folders on the drive, and Windows shows 183 GB free of 439 GB, but I cannot see any files within the folders. I've run diagnostics on the drive, and everything comes back clean. I've also taken ownership of the files on the drive, and ensured all hidden files and folders are showing. Still can't see any files on the drive, just the folders. Any thoughts on what I may be missing or other steps I could take?
