I dug out my 11 year old computer and am trying to upgrade it from windows 7 to windows 10. Never done an OS upgrade before.

Problem is this computer was made back when it was cool to have the OS on a small SSD and then everything else on an HDD. So I got win7 on a drive that has 5.78 gb free out of 55.8 gb on that drive. Ive added up the folders in that drive but it only equals about 40 gigs of space taken up. Not sure why that is. Already ran disc clean up and CCleaner. Any advice?

Solution
OCZ-VERTEX3 and it looks like it might be this model VTX3-25SAT3-60G and 2.5" since I cant find anything similar sized.

As for specs

3.3Ghz Intel Core i5-2500K 6MB Cache Quad-Core
ASUS P8Z68-V
8GB (4GBx2) Corsair XMS3 12800 DDR3 1600Mhz
SDD above
1 TB Hitachi HDS721010CLA332
ASUS 1060ti

I think that's everything.
One way to do this is get a 250/500GB ssd and clone the orig.
That will give enough space for windows and apps.
The 1 TB hdd use for storage.

Or get a 1TB ssd and dump everything on it depending on how full the hdd is.

Yeah, win 10 since apparently you can still upgrade for free.

I don't know anything about compatibility issues. If the current drive isnt going to work will a modern 2TB SSD work with this hardware?

Windows will allocate pagefile and hyberfil which can get log and event logs which may not appear in normal searches. but it should be easy to clone the drive to a larger SSD and do the upgrade, plus it gives you a backup if something goes wrong

you can set a fixed pagefil to reduce disk used and it will decrease hiberfil proportionally if the needed space is close
