Hello guys!
So I have an external HD. It is a USB 3.0 Wester Digital (My Passport - 1 Terabyte)

A wrong formatting has given me a lot of problems, but recently i resulted to fix the whole HDD with some Low Level Formats and now it perfectly works again. :)

Now I put about 40 gigabyte of files on it, but when I overcome the 40 GB the disk doesn't accept new files. From 0 to 40 GB I can write and read its files, but after the 40th GB it gives me strange errorS (0x8000FFFF ...) so I can't write new files...

I checked the disk with a LOT of different softwares they say me that the HDD has 0 bad sectors, but after passing the 40th GB all these softwares crash, I THINK that the sectors after the 40th GB are NOT damaged, simply they are locked because once the low-level-format stopped before it was finished.
So the hdd FIRMWARE remained "corrupted" / locked, the sectors are ok.

Can you help to solve this problem?
Sorry for my english, Michael 😀

Hi there Mich-C,

Sorry that you are facing some issues with your WD drive. 🙁

My advice would be to back up the data stored on the drive, as just WyomingKnott suggested.

Apart from that, I believe you can provide some more information on:

Is the drive under warranty?
What tools have you used? I believe you can try to write zeros on the drive once again. You can do so with WD's DLG tool: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=mV5IBL

After that, you can run both short and extended DLG tests.

How is the drive recognized by Disk Management?

Let us know how this goes,

Hello! Thank you for the interest. :)

The HD has warranty, t I bought it from the online-shop Aliexpress, I registered the HD on the WD website and WD said me that warranty in Italy is not avaible just because I bought it from another country! :fou: I can't believe it!

I already used the write zero function of the WD tool and I think my hard drive really failed when I used that software 🙁 I downloaded other "universal" softwares that zero the drive and I found them more reliable than the WD tool.
WD tool stops itselgf before finishing the work for "too many bad sectors" error, while other programs fully work

Anyway writing zeros perfectly works from 0 to 40 gb as I said but it immediately stops after the 40th gb because after that the drive is locked in "READ-ONLY" function. SO, to fix my hdd I just need a tool or a way that allow to UNLOCK the drive! :)

P.S. The drive its Fully Recognized and Working both in "disk managment" and in "Computer". I can't just write data on it From that Point.

Hello thank you for the advice! 😀
But I have too much data on my PC so I want to free up a lot oof memory just moving games and films on this external HD.
Important data will rest on my PC, that's why I want to fix this disk!
