Hi everyone :) I found an HP Pavilion a6700y in the dumpster and I decided I wanted to upgrade the processor. I've already put 8gb of DDR2 800 ram and an ati 240 gpu inside. Now i'm stuck at the processor part. the website which i'll list below states that the mobo can only handle a 5600+ dual core and up to 89 watt TDP.

However, I see there is a 6000+ 89 watt tdp version that was made and unsure if it would work in the motherboard. I'm not sure if the PC upgrade spec page was made at the time that there was only a 5600+ out there.

Shouldn't in theory any 89 watt tdp AM2/AM2+ cpu work? Would the 6000+ be the way to go for an upgrade that will enable this pc to play older titles? I appreciate you guys taking the time to look at this thread and help.

Oh, nm, I e you already put 8gb of ram in it. That's what I meant. It looks like both are an actual 3ghz. But that said, rereading, you said the site says it can only take up to 5600.

That said, your site says the cpu was a quad (original phenom).

According to it, this should be the best cpu it can accept.

If you can find a faster phenom 1, I suppose you could try it and it may boot, but I'm not sure. Might need to find a better CPU cooler than stock.
You'd be limited to whatever bios they had also, not just the socket.

Toss that in there, bump it to 4gb. What coa sticker is on it? If perchance it's Windows 7, you should be able to load Windows 10 and activate with the windows 7 key. If it had that, you could put an SSD in it and it would make a fine email/web browsing pc.

It was windows vista and had to burn the OS and put a nice copy of 7 on there. Do you think the 5800+ will be the best processor the mobo can handle? And what do you mean bump it to 4gb? Thanks for your help too!!!
