Hi everyone, i never overclocked CPUs, so i'm a beginner.
Let's start, my specs are not much of good, but i'm slowly building it:
Core 2 Quad Q9400
Gigabyte-G41
2x Some Cheap DDR3 2GB
Have some chinese cooler called "Deep-Cool". It was most expensive among them, i think it's fine )
Gigabyte Geforce GTX 970 G1 Gaming.
Seasonic 650w Semi-Modular PSU.

The thing is, i have tried, increased FSB a bit so i can get 3.00 Ghz (tried to do 2.8Ghz too).
No luck, pc turns off and loads fail safe. Then tried increasing Vcore a bit, no luck.
I heard that i need to underclock my RAM a bit, but i couldn't find where i do that on my Mobo's bios, but i think its automatically underclocked while FSB is increased.

Did i do something wrong ? Or my cheap RAMs or old Mobo is failing ?
I'm planning on to wait until next gen CPUs to come out, to make the upgrade so want OC this one a bit

What voltages are you using for you CPU Core and RAM? What voltage is your RAM speced at?

You have to raise your CPU voltage, Un-core (I think it is NB on your system) voltage and RAM voltage when FSB over clocking because you are raising the over clock on all of this stuff. This is why they say to not start with these older systems when trying to learn how to overclock. If you wish to do this I would use the teeter totter method to over clock.

Try this it might help you...

I think you are going to have to bring your MCH voltage up a little. This is your Un-core voltage which should up your North Bridge Voltage and stabilize it.

Also, what is the voltage rating on your RAM? Should be written on the side of the RAM module.

Last but not least, that core voltage on your CPU seems really low. I would bring it up. It's most likely the cause of your problem.

Good luck and be careful. Only do tiny clocks then tweek each item to get the system stable. Stress test (CPU - Prime 95 and RAM SupperPi or HyperPi) and monitor temps (Speed Fan) and try again until the voltages/temps are way too high to get little clock increases.

Don't for get to Google and watch the tutorials on how to do this.

This may help...
