ok so READ. windows firewall is off. routers firmware is latest version. 2 weeks ago i tried to make a minecraft server for my friends and at first i was having trouble opening the port but then i got it open and the server was up and running fine. so acouple days ago i had to make a server for tekkit. same process of port forwarding. i even did a fac reset on the router. but now when i try and port forward 25565 and click save my internet cuts off. it never did this before and idk why its doing it now. i have cox internet. 100mbps and 10 upload. and i have a belkin router

how do i enable telnet then?

From your control pannel, go to 'Uninstall a program'. On the left banner you will see 'Turn Windows features on or off'. Click on that and it will take a moment to load. Scroll down a bit and check the Telnet Server checkbox. Voilà.

Other than that, did you turn off the DHCP feature that reset your IP over time? Mine was changing every 1400 minutes in a 0 - 199 range. You can do that on the same web page you were port forwarding.

ill give it a shot. and dhcp? ive never seen it

I ment the feature that randomly changes your IP over time. Not sure if it's the DHCP itself or a feature of it. I know you can fix a static IP adress that won't change over time somewhere in DHCP options. That's necessary when you want to port forward (at least that's what solved my problem).

If you want a fully static IP, you just set it from your PC, or some routers you can tell to keep the same IP for a device. The amount of time it will keep it is known as the lease time. But turning off DHCP would render the entire network unusable as no PC's would get an IP at all. Most newer routers keep your IP the same anyways unless you factory reset the router.

Ok thanks that's good to know. Where do you set the static IP in windows?
