Question Trying to recover an iphone 6; iTunes won't play ball

My friend's iPhone 6 wouldn't update, and crashed whilst trying to backup and update yesterday.

It's now in recovery mode, and I've followed the steps on this page: https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201263. I connect to the PC, open iTunes, force a restart and wait until the 'Connect to iTunes' screen to release the buttons but then iTunes doesn't recognise it, so the Update or Recover options don't appear.
The computer does however make the sound to say it knows a device has been connected via USB. (All of the above on Win 10).

Can anyone advise me on how to recover it? I do have access to a Mac Mini which I could use if necessary but it shouldn't make any difference, should it?

It should work off the PC, as long as the iPhone is in working shape. The fact that it did not run the update and then crashed during some other use points to some issue with it. Trying on another computer is a good idea to rule out any issues with the computer or cable.
