Hi guys!

I have a hard drive that doesn't want to load. There are some pics here: http://www.megafileupload.com/en/file/598613/HDD-photos-rar.html

I thought that testdisk software would do the job but still waiting for 6 hours already and still tries to loads (see the photo)
Just wanted to save a 2.5 GB file from it and I'm out of ideas.
I'm using the bad hard disk as a slave with another hard drive connected just to be able to save everything on it if I get it right. Hopefully...
I followed the instructions here: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/263779-32-change-file-type-ntfs but I'm stacked to the first step.
Am I doing something wrong?
Now my machine is running Windows 7 Ultimate. Should I try with a Linux distro? Really, I don't know what to try much further that this.
Used even Easeus software before and I waited like a day and half, in the end telling me that is not readable...
Any ideas guys, please?
Thanks a lot...

Regards,

David

cool!... I read the instructions and it wouldn't be that hard... if I hear something like 'boom!' I'll let you know:) Now I'm still waiting for the whole bad hard drive to load again cause I plugged out... hope is not gonna take ages... let you know soon what's happening... I appreciate it

Oh, s***. Didn't realize you need a Windows XP image. Gimme a 1 day to post, I'll upload a disk image of Windows XP Home Edition, and then give you the link for it. And you'll need a serial key. I won't provide you with one, since that'll get me permabanned, so PM me for my email address.

I would start by getting an idea of the physical state of the drive. To this end I would examine the SMART report with a tool such as CrystalDiskInfo.

http://crystalmark.info/software/CrystalDiskInfo/index-e.html

Look for reallocated, pending, or uncorrectable sectors.

Next I would examine the drive with a disc editor, eg DMDE (freeware).

http://dmde.com/

Could you show us DMDE's Partitions window?

If you double-click your desired partition, do you see your files and folders? If so, navigate through the folder tree, r-click your desired file and select Recover Files.

You could try Partition Find and Mount:
http://findandmount.com

I do have a Windows XP original but could you take through to the instalation, please?... I'm really getting confused now... thanks

If I double click on Local Disk G: nothing is happening. I'll try again in couple of hours to load it again. Just let me know what you want to know, please and I;ll post it here later. I did realize though that if I want to performe commands like copy/paste something or rename a file or folder the process takes time to complete. Give me some time to have a nap in the meantime... I really appreciate your help, thanks a lot. I'll try everything what you said and I'll come back to you. Seeya later

here is it: http://www.megafileupload.com/en/file/598919/Capture6-PNG.html
Is this that you are after? Don't know if it's right... Is that ok? Thanks

This program is kind of cool! I've done a search for NTSC files to Local Disk G: and this is the pic:
http://www.megafileupload.com/en/file/599014/Capture10-PNG.html
I just pressed the tab 'Ignore all' and the program ran smooth checking the whole volume.
By the looks of it there are a lot of files buggered, isn't it?
Does this program fix any bad sectors on the disks/volumes? Is it possible to recover that 2.5 GB .mov file?
As I remember, the file that I'm looking for is on this volume.
Can't wait to get back to me with a positive answer:) Have a good one and thanks again!

Your drive is seriously ill. The raw values are in hexadecimal. I have converted them to decimal for you.

Reallocated Sectors Count = 0xE49 = 3657
Reported Uncorrectable Errors = 0x87 or 0xFFFF ??? = 135 or 65535
Command Timeouts = 0x8406 ??? = 33798
Reallocation Event Count = 0xE49 = 3657
Current Pending Sector Count = 0x64B = 1611

As you can see, there are several thousand bad sectors (reallocated and pending). I expect that many of these are associated with critical file system components, hence the "raw" file system. That is, the file system is damaged to the extent that Windows cannot mount it.

Ideally you would clone the drive, sector by sector, and then work on the clone, but the drive may seriously deteriorate during this process. Ddrescue would be the best tool for this purpose, as it understands how to work with bad sectors. However, if you could determine the physical location of your file and clone only those sectors, then that would be a better approach, IMHO.

If DMDE can show you a recovery tree (Open Volume), then perhaps you could select your desired file and recover it. Drive -> Device I/O Parameters gives you some options for error handling. For example, you might like to select a fill pattern such as DEADBEEF for any bad sectors.

1) Pop the XP disk into the DVD drive. If the computer don't have one, I'll help you.
2) Open BartPE's .exe file.
3) Press stop.
4) While it's stopping, go look for your DVD drive. It's usually "D:\".
5) Once it stopped, and you located the files for the DVD, look for the text "Builder" in the BartPE program. Then
click the 3 dots and go to the previously located location.
6) Go down the program and find the place that says "Create ISO Image".
7) Press it.
8) Press build.
9) Press yes.
10) Grab a cup of whatever you drink and wait.
11) Press close and close the program.
12) Download ImgBurn: http://download.imgburn.com/SetupImgBurn_2.5.8.0.exe
13) Install program. Note: You may want to watch the installation and press decline or uncheck accept to not install adware.
14) Once installed, open program and burn the file from "c:\pebuilder3110a\pebuilder.iso".
15) Boot to target computer.

Thanks for your reply, mate. Really appreciated...
1. What should I do with the decimal values that you gave me?
2. Let's say that the file is on physical drive G: how would I clone it sector by sector?
3. Please, check the pics and tell me what to do (left you a text in Capture3 file) just take me step by step, please... I'm a noob doing this and if there is any slight chance to recover that . mov file, we'll get drunk together!!!:)

Cheers!

1) Nothing. Those are useless figures of how many sectors and errors, since he's asking for you to recover a partition to a dying hard drive. It will die, so it's useless.
2) Cloning it sector by sector means Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image.
4) Did you even READ my latest post?!
