Hi everyone,

My older computer is done, I have been limping it for about a year.
Its an x99 motherboard, in a known boot loop error code and sometimes it does not boot. Had someone fix it but there not able to fix it anymore, its to do with the board.

So I am looking to reuse my ram with is a 4x4=16gb its CMK16GX4M4A2800C16

Here is what I have in my computer and I have 2 other hdds one is a wd black 4tb about 3 or 4 years old and seagate 4tb mainly has pics and docs.

I was planning on buying some new parts max is 700 with taxes and I am in Canada. Why I asking is I could put that money saving on ram to a better cpu. Would that be fine for reusing it or should I get new ram ?

If I would bump up of what I was going to spend what would you recommend ? Also later down the line I would like it for windows 11. I would really like 6 sata as I do not have any m.2. If you do have a pcie sata card what would you recommend ? Also I am in Halifax, I have used Memory Express before moving they are really good. But I am no where close to them.
2x16GB DDR4 3600 and a board with enough SATA ports to suit your needs.

GIGABYTE Z690 UD AX DDR4 $199.99
Here's a few cost cutters. That case down below not only has excellent airflow but it comes with a built in fan speed controller.

Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3200MHz 16GB (2x8GB) CL16 $74.99

Reusing DDR4 2800 speed ram will work very nicely on a Intel 12th gen processor and a DDR4 based B660 or Z690 motherboard.
Ryzen is a bit more of an issue since ryzen depends on fast ram and may be picky about compatibility.

What is the main use of this pc?
You can buy a i5-12400 processor for $250:

and a B660 DDR4 motherboard in the $150 range.

Sorry about not getting back sooner. I was on the road with my job.
I just for got to add I am in Canada, NS. Max is 650 to 700 with tax.
Here is what I have

total ssd is 2 and hdd is 4
power supply is hx850
the cpu from older computer is an i7-5820k
Cpu for now is something close or better.
ram is CMK16X4M4A2800C16
gpu gigabyte 1080 (currently its good for now would like to go for rtx 3060ti)
case corsair 750d (not airflow one)
Also its has 4 usbs on the panel

Idea on games is tarkov, red dead 2, metro and the newer games coming out from bethesda,
medium to high setting. 4k would be nice but I understand that is to do with the gpu. I do have 3 monitors (2 are benq and the other is very old from vista) and I am going to be upgrading 1 monitor at a time in about 1 years.

I5-12400 would be a huge increase in cpu performance.
Your I7-5820K has 12 threads and a passmark rating of 9828.
That is when all 12 threads are fully busy.
That is not do likely since most games can not effectively use more than 6-8 threads.
Of more importance is the single thread rating of 2005:
https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i7-5820K+@+3.30GHz&id=2340
By comparison, the I5-12400 also has 12 threads with a rating of 19562/3529:
https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i5-12400&id=4677

I would plan on reusing your 2800 speed ddr4 ram.
You will always have the option to change out ram later if you wish.
3600 speed is about the sweet spot when buying new.
But, 2800 speed is, in general within 5% of 3600.
It depends on the app you are running.
For games, running at 1440P or 4k resolution, the graphics card becomes more of the limiter.
