Upon powering on my first-ever self-built PC, I was met with... trouble. I am sometimes able to get to the bootup screen for Windows 8 64bit (booting via optical drive,) but I cannot use my mouse or keyboard to select anything. The second time this happened, I was met with a Machine Check Error. Yikes. After this happens, it's difficult to even get to that prompt, as the mobo declines to even output anything.
My build:
i5 4430
MSI GTX 970
MSI z97 g45 Gaming mobo
Rosewill Capstone 650 PSU
Trying to boot to a 128gb SSD connected via a normal SATA connector.
Things I have done wrong at first:
Connected the front panel connectors (Power LED, etc) improperly.
Been a bit unsure about the PCI connectors from the PSU to the GTX (I have both the 8 pin via adapter connected, as well as the joining 6-pin.) Still a bit iffy on this, actually.
When I power on, the CPU fan and GPU come to life, but after the first boot, it would not get back to the mobo's prompt screen for boot device selection. I remedied this by unplugging and replugging a bunch of stuff, but even getting back to the Windows language etc selection screen, I cannot use my kb/m.
My kb: A usb-connected CM Storm Quickfire
My mouse: Logitech G502
I went into this blind, and tutorials have been helpful, but most of them seem to still presuppose some know-how I apparently lack. So any ideas as to what might be good courses of action to take to diagnose and fix this are appreciated.
