Trying to upgrade

I have an old dell xps 400 desktop which runs really well, so I decided to do some upgrades. When I tried to upgrade my memory from 4gb to 8gb, the result was, restarting over & over. so I took the additional 4gb back out. My question is, why did it keep rebooting like that, & what is the solution if any, so I can upgrade the memory? Thank you..

4g is the max memory for that pc.

The motherboard in that PC only supports DDR2 Up to 4 GB. Short of upgrading mobo, you are out of luck.
