Hello everyone, I currently own a Msi gx70. I've noticed that when i let it sleep and wake it up later the turbocore boost speed does not work. The cpu is rated at 2.5ghz-3.5ghz turbo (never actually seen it reach 3.5 though). I have checked through resource manager and overdrive. When it sleeps it will not boost, but if i reboot it will boost up to 3.2-3.4 ghz (32-34x multiplier). Resource monitor shows it going up to 98% after wake up and up to 116% or so after reboot. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

I considered updating bios before but i was deterred by this message:
Users who download BIOS from here (not using Live Update) should use the flash utility included in the downloaded compressed file when doing the BIOS update. To avoid BIOS update failure, please do not use older versions of the update utility or utilities not provided by MSI.
- If the notebook you purchased has Win7 Bios installed, please DON'T attempt to update using Windows 8 bios (or vice versa). Failure to abide may result in bricking your system.

- Although there's a bios detection program written to protect user from cross flashing the bios (Win7 to Win8 bios or vice versa), still DON'T experiment. Failure to abide may result in breaking your system.

I did get the laptop with win8 installed, and i had to switch bios from uefi to legacy to install win7, something about a gpt error. I'm guessing that's what they mean by win7 and win8 bios, any thoughts?

Did this problem start after you installed Win 7 and switched BIOS?
If yes, your safest bet will be to revert back to Win 8, and the default BIOS setting to do that update.
However, since MSI provides a step by step guide to perform the update for Win7, you can follow it and as far as I can tell, in the worst case scenario, the BIOS won't update and stay with your current version.
That said, if your laptop is still within warranty period, it is better to get it done by the official service center guys, if you have even a shred of doubt about how to do that update.

Okay, I updated the bios, i got a corrupted system32 error but that's been fixed. Laptop is now working normally. However, i put it to sleep and tried again. The problem still persists. I don't know when it actually started. I recently became concerned with what i could do to make it faster and I started looking into programs like overdrive and afterburner. That's when I noticed it. As for win8, this problem doesn't seem significant enough to justify going back to win8. I don't actually know if the problem was present with win8 because I installed win7 on the same day I received the laptop.

Then try the following steps and see if it helps
Go to Control Panel -> Power Options and click Change plan settings to High performance.
Then click on Change advanced power settings.

Scroll down to Processor power management and expand it.

Expand Maximum processor state and modify both On battery and Plugged in to 100%.

Then click Apply and OK.
If it still doesn't help, try 99%.
Also do you use any power management software provided by MSI or any third party one?
If yes, uninstall it and follow the steps above.

As a matter of fact, I use samsung magician soft which came with my SSD. I always have the plan set to samsung high performance. But i have to switch it when i turn on the laptop. For some reason it defaults to power saver plan after reboot.

I uninstalled magician and am now using regular high performance setting but the problem hasn't been fixed. It's like something happens to the laptop when it sleep and it forgets it can boost cpu speed. Also, even though i have max speed set to 100% it never seems to pass 98%

I tried setting maximum freq to 99% and resource monitor showed a speed cap of 82%, reverting back to 100% increased monitor freq to 98% again.

I finally understand what is happening. When the laptop sleeps and wakes up the turbocore gets locked. I am unable to change the settings in overdrive (not that they work after applying anyway) but after reboot the turbocore settings can be played with. Overdrive tells me that turbocore can be disabled and a reboot is needed to reenable it. So something is disabling turbocore when the laptop sleeps.

Take the next step then. Go to msconfig and disable all startup programs except the AV, reboot and see if that helps. If it does work OK, play with the startup programs one by one to find the culprit. Some utility programs may also be responsible for it.
