TV won't be detected as a monitor

Hi, I'm attempting to use a Dynex TV as a second monitor for my computer but it won't be detected, by windows or by my graphics card. I have it connected with a VGA cable. My graphics card is an ATI Radeon HD 5700 series.

I tried turning the TV to VGA and using the windows screen resolution menu I tried to extend the displays but it wouldn't work, even though I have the second monitor option set to display VGA. I tried going into the AMD catalyst control center and it refuses to detect my TV. I also tried to add it as a device via the control panel and I didn't see it in the menu there. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

If the Dynex TV doesn't send any EDID (Extended Display Identification Data) or sends the incorrect EDID then this what usually happens.

The graphics card driver doesn't know how to communicate with the Dynex TV.

Was the TV turned on and the input source set to VGA before you powered on the computer?

Definitely.

Some older graphics cards will not redetect monitors that are attached and/or powered on after the computer has already booted up.
