So i am really torn between what monitor to get but first a bit more information. I currently have a VIZIO E-Series 60” Class Razor LED™ Smart TV and use it as my monitor but i want to go to a more personal approach and play at a desk with wired devices. I play all genres of games so that is something to account for. Currently on this tv I have a bit of screen tearing on games and have a nvidia 770 2gb card.I am going to upgrade the card to a 970 here very shortly but not sure if it is the "monitor" or the card.

My main question:

Is having a tv as a monitor considered a bad thing? Compared to what I have what is the most simular? I keep seeing tn vs IPS panels, 60hz ips vs 144hz tn or just 60hz vs 144hz. I want to ideally have the best monitor that i can that perferably a 2k resolution and 27+ inches. Currently the picture on my TV is beautiful so i would be fine with the same quality of color I have just more resolution. Budget is ~500 but can move a little.

Thanks for any information!!!!

Using an LED HDTV as a monitor for gaming is fine. I also like the Vizio LED's and agree that their colors are great and bright.

The downside of using an HDTV as a monitor is that the text resolution is not as good in many cases.

If you want more resolution, you can either go to a HDTV with 4K resolution, or get a dedicated computer monitor. For a monitor, the IPS panels are generally felt to be better as they have much improved viewing angles. Look for panel from Asus or Viewsonic.

Thank you for your response
If i were to go to a dedicated monitor what would be better to have? A 144 refresh rate tn panel or a 60hz ips panel? I know ips is normally a 5ms response and tns can be as low as 1ms response but for price thats the difference. to get a 144 hz ips it is about another 200+ dollar jump.

Thanks
