the only time when you get below 75C temps at full load on a 4870 X2 is if you have an LCS or one of the ASUS tri-fan's.

also get a new E-ATX supporting case and a new motherboard, preferably with 2 or 3 slots between each PCIe lane that you plan to use, so it will help if you have an asrock deluxe or a P6T/SE.

This will give you a lot better airflow between the cards and more space to put loose cables.

try removing the cooling system clean the gpu -reaply some top dog thermal paste, check if the heatsinks are properly in contact, i dont own a 4870 x2 ( i wish i did) but temsp reaching 85-90* C i cant see that being right in my opinion :/

couple of things you can try
Cable managment
Clean you your case (dust)
Change speed to manual and set it at 50%, i've heard everyone usually does this and it should stay around 75 (does sound like a lawnmower i do believe..)
You can sort of *mod* your case but getting a small 120mm fan, sticking it somewhere where it wont fall off (empty hard drive bays) use some cable ties and make it blow air straight at your video cards and then the air blows out of your case. (I've seen it in pictures 😛)

I have the original version HD4850 and they hit 81 idle.I chopped the plastic off the cards up to the fan intake end just leaving the part forming the fan case and they dropped to 42 deg. I also have a fan pulling air into them from the intake end.

Set fan contol on manual to round 75% since the drivers seem a bit incapable of doing this themselves and let your cards overheat and get a red light.

Dude, your pics show that you've got no airflow to your card intakes. Separate the cards a bit with something so card #1 gets air (it looks like its not getting ANY), then arrange a fan to blow outside air on the intakes. Killer setup, but ventilate it. Luck.

I agree with lonewarder, there is NO space for your cards to breathe, is there another PCIe slot that you can use ? Also, with your cards that close, it may be more likely that your video memory is getting too hot, rather than the actual cores.

i also had the same prob! i tried heatsinks, even considered water cooling (too much of a hassle) solution:

i installed 4*120mm case fans (2 facing INTO cooler slot, 1 on the end facing AWAY, 1 facing CPU)
and 2*80mm case fans directly onto uppermost cooling plate)

also changed the case to a big tower

idle temps 56C and 90C under load

a little noisy BUT effective!

hope this helps!
