Two problems with errors found in Event Viewer

Hey guys, been having some trouble with windows 10 lately. Was running fine for a few months when I built the PC, but now things are going a little cookoo. Anyway, here are some of the problems.

On the tasbar on the bottom of the screen, when I try to right click on the icons to bring up their respective menus, nothing happens. I toyed around a little with event viewer, and realized it was giving me this Administrative Event error every time I did the right click...


Event 69, AppModel-Runtime

Failed with 0x490 modifying AppModel Runtime status for package Microsoft.Windows.ShellExperienceHost_10.0.16299.15_neutral_neutral_cw5n1h2txyewy for user DESKTOP-8NDO8FK\Ian (current status = 0x0, desired status = 0x20).



Also, you know how you hover over the icons on the taskbar and it'll show you a little mini version of the program window? Well, it tends to not go away when after i stop hovering over it. I'll have to hover over other apps, and sometimes even then it doesn't work and the little mini view stays. Don't have an error for that.


The other problem I DO have an error for is one day I opened up my firefox browser, and suddenly it's telling me to make it my default browser... AGAIN! 200% sure I did this in the past, but whatever, should be easy enough. I click "Make this my default browser" and it brings me to that control panel page where you can change your default programs. It seemed that Microsoft Edge or whatever is suddenly my default browser... So I click on the menu that shows me my options, and click Firefox... It pauses for a little bit and.... BAM! The control panel window just closes itself without any message of any sort... So, I close my firefox browser and reopen to see if it changed to my default browser... Nope! It's asking me again if I want to make this my default browser.. Has been happening every time I reopen the browser.. Anyway, I found an Event Viewer Error that happens on the exact time every time I test it! Here it is..

Now, I've already mentioned in another thread that I had a BSOD when playing Total war Warhammer a couple times.. and also that my PC just hangs at the motherboard screen on boot.. Have to reset the PC like 30-50 times until for some reason it finally slips through that hanging screen.. Have reset the CMOS and other basic things to try to get by it, but it only seems luck (and maybe smacking the tower once in a rage) works.

Anywho, I dunno if the last bit of information is related the two errors up above, but if the two errors could at least be fixed, I'd be grateful... If I even knew what was CAUSING it, I'd be grateful!!

right click start button
choose powershell (admin)
type SFC /scannow and press enter
once its completed, copy/paste this command into same window:
Repair-WindowsImage -Online -RestoreHealth and press enter
SFC fixes system files, second command cleans image files, re run SFC if it failed to fix all files and restart PC


Default browser. there used to be a way to assign all file types to a given app, I can't seem to find it in settings now. I understand your pain, I had to fight my install to get Chrome as default.

I found one solution but unless you have 2 versions of FF installed (32 bit and 64 bit)< its unlikely to help.

I assume you aren't running Win 10 S

There are three other ways to set your default program. In Default apps, navigate the page to find the following:

Choose default apps by file type
Choose default apps by protocol
Set defaults by app
To manually change your default browser, follow these steps:

1. Set your preferred default browser to skip Choose default apps by file type. Click Choose default apps by protocol then look for HTTP and HTTPS. Change them to your preferred browser.

2, After that, click Set defaults by app and wait for the new windows to load. Search your preferred browser and click it. Select Set this program as default and press OK.

3. Close all your browsers and check if it still asks you to set your browser.

BSOD: Can you follow option one here
and then do this step below: Small memory dumps - Have Windows Create a Small Memory Dump (Minidump) on BSOD

that creates a file in c windows/minidump after the next BSOD
copy that file to documents
upload the copy from documents to a cloud server and share the link here and someone with right software to read them will help you fix it

I wanted to follow what you said the the SFC / scannow, but when I right click on the start button, I doin't see a place to type anything. I should probably mention that I'm using someting called Classic Start menu shell to make my windows 10 look more like windows 7. Anywho, for giggles I tried typing this in the run bar after LEFT clicking the start menu to bring up the start options but when I did, it just showed a cmd prompt box for a split second before disappearing. I noticed that even when I try to just write "cmd", the cmd prompt window only flickers before disappearing still.

go to settings/update & security/recovery
under advanced startup, choose restart now
this loads you into windows recovery environment

choose troubleshoot
choose advanced
choose start up options
hit the restart button
choose a safe mode (it doesn't matter which) by using number associated with it.
Pc will restart and load safe mode

see if powershell works here and try running sfc again
Command prompt should, need to run the admin version though. if search works you can right click the command prompt result and run as admin
If it doesn't, open task manager
choose, file, run new task
click the box to make it admin and type cmd, and press okay

I'll definitely write this down to try the next time my PC resets. While I still need the PC operating now, I'm doing everything in my power so that it WON'T reset currently. I know the smart thing to do would be to reset regardless of whether or not I ever get back into windows, but some things needing being done are time sensitive. Thank you extremely much for your help!

Also.. where is settings/update & security/recovery? I can't find advanced start up.

P.S. Tried the last thing you said, going to task manager, picking run new file, checking that admin box and typing cmd. Still closes instantly after the window opens. No difference

Safe mode does use the normal Win10 start menu even if you have Classic Shell installed.

If powershell is working on your system, here is how to access it using the Classic Shell start menu:

If that doesn't work, press Win+R to open the Run dialog. Type in the following:
%SystemRoot%\system32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\
Press OK. Scroll down to powershell.exe and right click on it, choose Run as administrator.

🙁... so i have a new problem now. I lost power for a few days due to a storm, and when i turned my pc back on, it's showing a blue screen, NOTa bsod, but a blue windows screen saying "Your pc ran into a problem and needs to restart. " keeps looping on that screen until it auto repairs, then gives me some options including windows restore and command prompt. I did windows restore but ut didn't fix anything. Seems like this new problem has replaced the freezing problem.

Because of the way win 10 shuts down now, its not actually off when you turn it off, its asleep. As such. if you unplug it or lose power in that time, it has a chance of losing certain files it needs to startup again. I see it a fair bit.

On another PC, download the Windows 10 media creation tool and use it to make a win 10 installer on USB - just a boot drive

since auto repair is working, I have to assume the hdd is still.

Is there anything on PC you want to rescue?

change boot order in BIOS so USB is first, hdd second
boot from installer
on screen after languages, choose repair this pc, not install.
choose troubleshoot
choose advanced
choose command prompt

I typed notepad in which obviously opened the notepad. From there I went to file > open which opened a file explorer

use that to copy files off PC or onto 2nd hdd if you have one.


Windows restore? is that reset this PC or System restore? there is a difference. Did it finish or just not do anything? Any errors?

Well what I ended up doing right now was going in through safe mode and disabling Verifier. As soon as I did that and reset, it booted up no problem. However now my ps4 controller won't work.. 🙁 Not sure how to get my ps4 controller drivers working alone..
