Hi,
I recently built a new computer (https://pcpartpicker.com/list/CT3BzM) and am having trouble with reliably getting it to start. I think the issue is with either my ASUS Z-170 Pro motherboard or my G.Skill TridentZ Series 16GB (2x8, DD4-3200).
Starting four days ago, on the initial set of RAM, I tried starting the computer with both sticks of RAM and the monitor wouldn't find any image/the computer wouldn't even get to BIOS. Then I inserted just one stick into slot A2 and it would work and I was able to install Windows/get things going. I tried enabling XMP, disabling XMP, but no matter what I couldn't get it to start with two sticks. I also tried replacing the initial RAM stick in A2 with the other stick of RAM and it wouldn't start. That led me to believe there was a problem with the one stick of RAM, so I RMA'd the set and left the computer as it was.
Fast forward to today, I received the new set of RAM. Same issue, the computer won't show any image/make it to BIOS with two sticks of RAM. Inserting only the first of the two sticks into slot A2 has the same problem where I won't even get into BIOS. However, if I insert the second of the two sticks into slot A2, I can get into BIOS/boot from a drive, but now when I try to boot off my SSD (with Windows installed) or the optical drive with the Windows CD, Windows just says "Preparing Automatic Repair" and will stay at that screen forever.
I've become incredibly frustrated. I'm not sure if this is a mobo or a RAM problem or what, but it seems like the chances of 1 out of the 2 sticks of RAM being defective in both sets would be very, very low. However, unlike the initial set of RAM, now I can't do anything with this computer even with just one stick of RAM as I'm stuck at "Preparing Automatic Repair".
Any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated.
