Tyan 9600Pro review at TheTechReport

A fairly comprehensive review of the <A HREF="http://www.tech-report.com/reviews/2003q3/tyan-9600pro/index.x?pg=1" target="_new">Tyan R9600Pro</A> at The Tech Report.
Take not of the deconstruction of the heatsink (rubber ontop of the memory?) Also not the type of memory Hynix, which isn't s good as either of the Samsungs on offer.
I also like th ability to monito temperatures, and ontrol the HSF. Dual DVI might be nice once the better LCDs ar more widely aailible/cheaper.

This is another review that makes me wonder exactly HOW the FX5600 beat the R9600P in ANY of THG's VGA buyers guide tests? And it shows that the few tests that were run won't give as detailed a picture as a review like this.

It would seem that Tyan actually put a little effort into making this video card, which can't be said about alot of the manufactures today. They merely slap on their own sitcker, change the heatsink, and it's the same as the refrence board from ATI/nvidia.

And it does make me wonder why THG gave the fx 5600 the editors choice. In all the reviews I've seen, the 9600Pro usually beats the 5600, and the 9600Pro is usually much cheaper. Go figure.

That's a good looking card. I'd have expected a little more memory OC headroom, but their theory of the shared heat sink makes sense.

Tit for tat, butter for fat, ATi's dog kicks nVidia's cat

(Maximum PC)

Also remember that it's SLOWER rated memory (they even mention it in the article) to begin with, It's the Hynix memory wich is 3.3ns (rated to 275mhz), instead of the Samsung BGA 2.86ns memory of the BBA R9600Pro or the TSOP 3.0ns (there are some 3.3ns as well) memory of the R9600Non-pro, so runnign stock on this card is ALREADY oc'd beyond spec.

However yes I think the rubber just made matters worse.

I too frowned on the editor's choice award going to the fx5600. Personally I think its crap, I have a friend that bought one and returned it becuase it ran worse than his ti4200. It even costs alot more? How could this possibly have gotten the editor's award?

Hm i haven't read the article yet. But i'm suspecting some not so good things. Bribes or threats or maybe just fear?
I will make up my final conclusion after reading it.

I know where you're coming from, so I'll let it pass-by and simply wave.

However it is funy that in less than 24hrs there was an AD for that very same card on THG's front page.

Odd that!

yeah, I was actually almost considering the 5600 after reading the buyers guide, but I think I'll go back to my original choice of 9600 pro, and if I can scrounge more cash the 9700 pro.

Just a suggestion, but scrounge a 'little more' cash, not more cash, just a 'little' more and get the 9700Non-pro if you can. That would give you the best performance for a pretty small price. It's pretty much the concensus 'price/perf' choice around here (and most places). And I say this despite the fact that I own an R9600Pro and love it.
Unless you have concerns about power and heat, and since you say you're considering the 9700Pro. Consider the non-pro. It's only slightly lower in performance, yet it's usually significantly cheaper.

Just a thought.

I'd recommend the FX5600 Rev.2 if you were set on NV, but since you're not then the other options may be cheaper. Although if you find a great deal on one the that it's a good alternative (although still not as good as an R9700Non-pro).
