The word from AMD is that their dual-core processors will
work in current motherboards. In other words, if you
have a dualie today, late next year (assuming AMD's schedule
doesn't slip) you will be able to replace your single
core processors with dual core processors.
If you are a Windows user, the bigger issue might be
trying to use a non-server version of Windows with more
than two cores. It is going to be interesting to see
how MicroSoft responds to the prospect of non-server
machines with 4 cores next year and perhaps 8 cores in
2007 or 2008.
Similarly, if you are using a basic Server version of
Windows, you might run into problems if you upgrade a
4 core machine to 8 cores . Will MicroSoft require
you to use an "Enterprise" version ?
