They won't be using existing iPhone. Instead they might be looking into really customized iPhones like high performance battery & very rugged electronics.....

"Planning a military strategy flushing out insurgents from the Pakistan Border, theres an app for that."

I cannot imagine anything more fail then using a Mac in the military. Isn't military equipment suppose to be durable and difficult to crack? You just aren't going to get that out of Apple.

This has more to do with that Apple is the owner of PA Semi, who has provided the US defence forces with hardware solutions, without the staff from PA Semi, Apple wouldn't have anything to offer for any armed force anything else than expensive office desktops.

The military is interested in the user interface of apple products. On a battlefield you cannot use a stylus to enter text for example. Probable the phones will not be fitted with a GSM / WiFi module but with a military frequency encrypted data transceiver.

[citation][nom]gekko668[/nom]In the end everybody knows that PC will emerge victorious.[/citation]

You may be right, but which operating system will it be using?

Hint... PC stands for personal computer which includes many things people would not normally consider to be a PC. Phones, TV's, Music players, and many other devices with embedded computers.

LOL this is great lets put highly sensitive information on an Iphone so it can be hacked off by our enemies real smart. Considering an Iphone is easy to hack into this is not a good idea.

[citation][nom]1337_b0i[/nom]Good job apple! You can con more than just stupid consumers into buying your overpriced products. I wish I had these skills. Too bad apple is conning the US army out of our taxpayer dollars[/citation]

I fully agree that a lot of Apple products are overpriced, but.. if we look at those military produces like the F-22 and the ongoing projects.. we will know what is really overpriced!!!

[citation][nom]JackNSally[/nom]So now the military will be buying overpriced/underspecced computers?[/citation]

So now the military will continue to buy overpriced/underspecced computers. FTFY

I saw this coming. The Apple i-touch, for example, has a ton of military uses, and it is way ahead of the competition in terms of "usability." The main thing is the Wi-fi and the screen. You could program that to do everything from ordering air strikes, to checking battlefield intelligence on the fly.

I teach High School history and the kids here are addicted to the i-touch. I've got to admit that I'm looking at getting one myself, and I've been a PC guy since the 70s. The point is that the military is just one step out of high school for most of its recruits. If the kids use it in high school then its really easy for the military to train the kids on it when they get there.

Ahh.... that's one way to get Apple stuff. "I'll take an iPad, phone, touch, macbook and uhhh... yeah, this is research, I'll use this for everyday personal use to fully immerse myself in it... uhhh bill it to the department of defense.

Also, Nick Justice? That cannot be his real name. 😀

Oh yeah, cuz when I think of tough, reliable, no gimmicks all features technology... yeah I think apple.

LOL:

"U.S. Army Visits Apple in Search for Military Tech, finds none"

Can the iPhone be used on multiple networks or switch networks easily? If not, it means that the US government would have to buy every soldier multiple phones, one to work in Iraq, one to work in Afghanistan, etc. Now that seems like a waste of money. Or do you think Apple would let the US military jailbreak the phones?
