Acer laptops in my touch and feel opinion are way more flimsy (thinner plastics) than other brands. Just pick one up and you can twist the whole casing with hardly any effort. Dell's are built like rocks, but I loved the price point of my HP more.

And I bought an eee so suck on that Acer!

Does everyone just blow smoke out their asses? Walmart is EVERYWHERE and guess who sells Acer? On top of that (stereotype warning) 60% of people that shop at Walmart PROBABLY don't know shit from shinola about computers. Ooooo! Look at that! 199 for a Netbook mom! OK, get it. You can say this and say that about quality and comparisons but when it comes down to it, take a look at your LCD Televions. Go ahead. Take a look.

lol...it probably might be true...
As far as I see HP, Dell, Toshiba, Acer, ASUS, Sony, are the major contenders.
Besides HP & Dell there aren't really very many popular American computer makers. And as a previous owner of Dell laptop and current HP laptop and ASUS laptop & netbook owner...I can see it could actually happen. I have had not-so-good experience with my Dell and HP laptops...Dell's DVD drive malfunctioned in less than a year and HP's webcam malfunctioned within a year. Both hardware faults. Maybe I am just unlucky with HP & Dell or it is just true that HP & Dell have the highest malfunction rates. On the other hand i've had no issues with my ASUS laptop & netbook. Even one of my best friends Toshiba laptop is alive and kicking even after 3-4 years of heavy usage.

Don't have a much personal experience with Acer but I've heard they offer extremely competitive prices.

Sony's are as always just awesome. Their build quality can really go on-par with that of apple notebooks.

Oh and then there is also lenovo...but i haven't seen very many lenovo's in a while...

So basically for me, HP & Dell are out for good!

[citation][nom]vikatin[/nom]As a geek squad employee, I can say this, Best buy does not have much acer offerings but SOMEHOW, the most computers we see and try to fix, are of the acer variety. 30 percent of the computers we have always sold have been HP, so in default, we sell mostly HP computers. But we ALWAYS see the acers come back because of poor quality issues more so than HP despite only have 2 acer models out. Sure, Acer is cheap, looks like a good value, and seems to have a "good" selling reputation. But keep in mind, YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!!!Did I mention that I have a strong suspicion that Acer uses refurbished parts? So does that mean you are buying a refurbed laptop, or a new?!I noticed a scratch or two on the hard drive casings when I opened 3 Acer latops. Those laptops also had bad drives! Go figure!![/citation]

Hey geek squad employee...if a company was using refurbished parts and selling them as new...they'd probably be out already. And as for the scraches or two on the hard drive casings...well anyone can open up a laptop and mess around (most likely the owner messed around with it and couldn't fix it so brought it to you guys).

I highly doubt that anyone reading this even buy pre-made computers anyway, myself I have not bought a computer like in 20 years as I always
buy "spare parts" and assemble them myself... it's more Fun that way.

Don't be so sure. A lot of big manufacturers use refurbished parts in "new" computers. Remember Packard Bell?

I would not trust Acer. I bought an branch new Acer laptop and it was DOA. The DVD did not work. I returned it and got a macbook.
Acer should improve their own product quality before thinking about the survivability of their competitors or wipe them out.
Yes, Acer products is low-priced but it so low-quality. I would not pay for something that is no worth me awhile, even is low-priced.

To be honest I think that he may be right regarding computer assembly companies that sell premade systems. I doubt that companies such as ATI, Nvidia, and Intel will go away.

95% of the people who come to geek squad dont even know how to use a partition to restore an operating system, much less feel comfortable opening a computer. You have to realize, there ARE people who do not know how to even set up a computer out of the box or have trouble doing so!
Then there are other who might know, but do not want to risk it or do not have the time and rather have someone else do it.

Besides, opening a computer voids the manufacturer warranty unless done by certified professionals (apple support, geek squad, ETC)

[citation][nom]avatarprime[/nom]Don't be so sure. A lot of big manufacturers use refurbished parts in "new" computers. Remember Packard Bell?[/citation]Funny enough, my old Packard Bells were my most reliable machines. But to be fair I never bought anything from them after my socket 7 Pentium MMX 166. Some of their later hardware brought a whole new level of cheap... but their old stuff was solid, even if their tech support sucked. I wouldn't know, I never called it.

Also I upgraded that Pentium 166MMX to a 400Mhz K6-2, not bad for a 66mhz FSB socket 7 platform. 😛

Is this guy some kind of swami or something? In 20 years i expect my pc to be inside my pencil[oops they will be gone also].Who develops the technology? I guess they will be the ones to WIN.

I've owned an HP (my first PC), an Alienware (that I bought in 2006 that's still kicking, although not "current"), and a Dell. My father owns both an HP desktop and an Acer laptop.

My HP endured years of straight up abuse and torture from me and still managed to last a good long time. Not the easiest machine to work on though. My Alienware has been flat out amazing since the start. The Acer my father bought back in 2007 is never a speed demon even on the best of days. On the worst, it feels downright slow. I keep that machine tweaked up and in shape to the best of my ability like I would my own. My Dell laptop? I held out on buying from Dell for a long time, but eventually decided to give them a try. Glad I did. The machine has really been quite amazing! Yes, it cost more than the Acer, but I have really gotten a lot more out of it. If Acer really wants to beat HP and Dell, they need to do a bit more improvement on their build quality, and remove the massive crapload of junk software they preload onto their machines. I was afraid of that with the Dell, but guess what? It didn't come with junk! They've apparently learned their lesson.

PS - Oh, and I think Acer needs a new slogan. There's still no beating the good old fashioned "Dude, you're getting a Dell!"

This has become a dogfight.
Nobody can predict unless they have reliable data. So if Acer has researched and found that many companies will vanish, I'm pretty sure what Acer actually wants to convey is a hidden message to the competitors to evolve to become dinosaurs in the next generation. Lots going to change in 10 years, that's for sure. Its possible that there may not be any PCs at all!! We may be able to work with smart phones or something and there wont be any printers around. And yeah as for America. Its USA which will have major trouble, because if they dont have local competitors the prices will be too high for the local market because of foreseeable inflation in the country. Because of their unusual habit of intervening the internal matters of other countries and spending taxpayers money for bombing poor countries in the name of terrorism etc.. etc..

this acer guy may get his point. look what happen 10 years before and now in the american tv industry. tv that make in usa? tv with america brand. not just tv. america produce no shit after all. america only export beef and nothing. everything here is import from other country.

US brand TVs disappeared? Then why is VIZIO one of the leading US TV brands now? Sure they're for budget minded people, but that doesn't mean the market doesn't exist. This guy is an idiot, plain and simple. I love my Vizio US brand television. I've seen them all over the place, more common than the foreign brands because Vizio is cheaper. I can't stand these idiots flapping their jaws acting like they know everything. Get over yourself Mr. Taiwan, you're an idiot.

20 years is an eternity. It's likely that the PC itself will disappear within 20 years. Acer can join the dinosaurs just as easily as any other company.

[citation][nom]vikatin[/nom]As a geek squad employee,...[/citation]
Anybody with a brain is over-qualified to be in the "geek squad" IMHO...

[citation][nom]scryer_360[/nom]Also, about refurbished parts: I've seen refurbished hdd's in computers bought at Wal-Mart all the time.[/citation]
Hence why you can get shyt cheap...not because they love you haha.

HP will never "die"- printer and ink profits can keep the company afloat while servers will help rake in money on the side. Services and storage business will help them also.

Dell is no slouch, they are one of the top tier enterprise companies keeping toe to toe with HP and IBM. Sure, Dell isn't playing second fiddle to HP anymore, but they have a boatload of cash to reinvent themselves.

Lenovo can rely on ThinkPads to pad their pockets for corporate customers, and are one of the leaders in Asia (if not the largest PC seller in Asia).

Acer? Cheap POS peddler that only sells well to bottom-barrel customers that only care about price (eMachines and Gateway) and cheapo Acer netbooks. Enterprise? There's no presence. I think the reverse will happen in 20 years, so long Acer.
