UDMA & mode 4

Hi,

1.I've 2 HDDs in my system(one of recent WDC-40GB and the
other of 3yrs back Seagate-20GB) ....Set as primary
master/slave... Out of these 2 HDDs, the WDC one gets
formatted quickly whenever i format it..But the seagate
one takes a hell lot of time to get formatted (provided i
format them with the same tool and using the same
criteria)..Then why is this dissimilarity among these 2
HDDs???

2.In an IDE interface cable,there are 3 connectors---one
each at both ends and one near about at the middle..Which
connector ideally is meant for the master mode & which one
for the slave and which one should be connected on the
motherboard's primary/secondary IDE channel??? If i
connect the connectors to any arbitrary modes(say, the
master connector in the slave drive & viceversa), will it
affect the performance???

3.In HDD jumper setting (M=master; S=slave; C=cable
select), what does the "cable select" jumper mean and what
does it do???
In some HDDs there are 5 jumper settings while in some
there are 4 settings...Besides the general M; S; C
settings, what are the rest settings meant for??? In some
HDDs the jumper settings are not mentioned(like C; M; S),
in such cases how to know which setting is meant for which
mode??? any generalised rule for determining??

remains same (ie.. 2ndary slave in mode-4)..why it is so
happening??? How to enable UDMA-33 to the 2ndary slave

The WD drive is faster probably because its mfg to spin @ 7200 rpm,
while the seagate runs at 5400.With IDE cable and a master and slave on
it,set master at end,slave closer to mb,this makes the master use the slave
as it should be set at with xp as a page file (virtual-memory),also lets it
access it to use with system files.Cable select works with some mbs others
it wont,use master/slave pin settings.As far as cdrom/cdrw go,leave them
be,xp will adjust.If you use intel chipsets on mb,download application
accelera-
tor,all drives can be adjusted thru it,look for a wrench after you highlite
a drive.

Let's make this easy.

Use a 80 wire ide ribbon cable only. You won't have problems with
cross-talk, or random RF riding the cable.
On one end, colored blue, connects to the motherboard or pci interface ide
adapter board. The middle is gray, the slave is meant to go there. The end
is black, the master is meant to go there.

If you use cable select, both devices on the ide ribbon cable must use it.
Master will be on the end, slave in the middle.

If there's special settings, go to the hard drive maker's website armed with
the model number printed on top of the hard drive. One special setting
recently introduced a couple of years ago is the 32GB capacity jumper for
PCs that have trouble with hard drives bigger than that.

You may consider setting up primary master/slave as WD/DVD, and secondary
master/primary as Seagate/DVD.
