I have a Ultrawide 21:9 3440 x 1440p monitor and i'm trying to figure out what is the closest comparison in gaming benchmarks as 21:9 1440p often isn't listed. I know it doesn't require quite as much gpu horsepower as 4k 16x9, but would it be in the same ball park?

The problem is very few places benchmark UWQHD or UWFHD. I've found that if it can run between 55-60fps at 4k it can run 90-100fps at 3440x1440 on the same settings.

As an owner of a Predator X34 I can tell you if you want to play on Ultra @100Hz you need a 1080 Ti.
60Hz you should be fine with a 1080.

If you're keen on getting a new 20 series, the 2080 would be nice to have, and the 2080 Ti would be the only thing that would give you solid frame rates with ray tracing turned on in upcoming titles but that's a lot of money to spend on technology that literally 2-3 games have.

Without ray tracing, a 1080 Ti or 2080 will be super solid and give 90-100fps in most upcoming titles on Ultra quality.

As of right now the only game my 1080...

As of right now the only game my 1080 Ti really has trouble holding 90-100fps in is Far Cry 5.

That's great, thanks. my monitor is only 60hz so a solid 60fps is my goal. My current 970 isn't up to the task so i'm looking to upgrade. The ray tracing of the rtx cards seems cool but unless they offer huge performance increases to justify the price, I might just go with the 1080ti.

If I was in your shoes I would grab the 2080. It should be around the same price (emphasis on should) anr will have a slight performance bump and should be able to utilize ray tracing in upcoming titles. That’s just what I would do personally. But even a 1080 will do 60Hz Ultra pretty much any game no problem (assuming you also have a solid CPU)

Edit: the 2080 should be around the same price as 1080 Ti at MSRP.
