[SOLVED] Unable to open certain settings using the "right-click menu" on the taskbar (CMD opens and closes immediately - ERROR: ACCESS DENIED)

I recently stumbled upon a problem.

I can't use certain settings on Windows such as right-clicking on my taskbar and clicking the "Settings for the taskbar" option. Whenever I click on it, the command prompt appears for a brief second. Sometimes it opens up and closes immediately but sometimes it stays there for a second giving me an error message saying: ERROR: ACCESS DENIED.

The same thing goes for when I try opening my sound settings by right-clicking on the speaker icon in the bottom right corner. When I right-click on the speaker icon and select the "Open sound settings" option, the command prompt opens up and behaves the same way. Sometimes it opens and closes immediately and sometimes it stays there for a second telling me that error message I mentioned above.

can you right click start button or get same response?

if you can, see if this helps
right click start button
choose powershell (admin)
type SFC /scannow and press enter
once its completed, copy/paste this command into same window:
Repair-WindowsImage -Online -RestoreHealth and press enter
SFC fixes system files, second command cleans image files, re run SFC if it failed to fix all files and restart PC

if right click doesn't work there, try searching for powershell and then right click the app result and click run as admin, and then follow steps above.

fixing taskbar/Modern windows elements (modern windows is what all the new apps that came with win 10 are called) is a pain.

Downvoting someone for trying is one way to ensure they don't keep trying to help.

you could try making a new user and see if it has same problems - https://support.microsoft.com/en-au...-create-a-local-user-or-administrator-account
create a new local user
make it admin
log in and see if it is same problem.
If not, its easy enough to swap to new user.
To give it same access as normal user, log into normal user and go to C:/users folder.
copy the contents of the old user folder onto new user. Done

Now on new user, all you need to do is set up desktop and log into any programs you may have used before like Steam, Onedrive.

If that still doesn't work, You might need to do a reset/clean install.

I found that several other people are facing the same issue. I hope you will reply if you find any other way out.

under windows specifications, what version and OS Build?

Just curious as you say others have similar problems so might be a windows bug. If it still happens in a new user its windows, not user..

Now can you give me a detailed answer of how can I transfer all my data to my new account............... including wallpapers, etc

if you copy the contents of old user folder in C users you should have access to the same files now. I have done it before myself and you don't need to manually copy anything. It all should be there.

I have all my library folders relocated to a 2nd hdd. Libraries include My docs, music, pictures, videos. The reason I tell you this is if yours are all in the default locations, copying the folders contents over could mean you have to waste time while it copies folders like music, and if C is on a small ssd, you may not have the space.

How to move locations

1. Create the folder you want to use on hdd. One for each of the folders you are moving.
2. follow this - (I use dummies website purely is its clear) - https://www.dummies.com/computers/o...e-the-location-of-user-folders-in-windows-10/

whatever you do, make sure the location you want to copy them to is the folder you made, and not an entire hdd as that can be a pain to fix. Only click move when you sure.

if you relocate all the folders you can move, copying user folder doesn't chew all your space.

Is there any other method which can help me out without creating a new user? I would be grateful if you figure it out.

I am not an expert on fixing user profiles. Normally the answer is to use a new one. It takes time but its much shorter than some of the alternatives like reinstalling windows.

Thankfully, I got a Fiber Connection in my Area.
I got one and updated my PC to the latest build.
The problem is now solved.
