Hey guys,

Bit of an odd one as im usually overclocking, but i recently got a 4790k and im happy with the 4.4ghz, but it runs quite high voltage stock (1.263v) under load at 4.4 which gets pretty hot up to like 70c in games.

Basically i know it is being given generous voltage amounts because ive done a manual underclock and ive stress tested with aida64 for hours with the same stock 4.4ghz but at a lower 1.15v, which runs alot cooler and is using 0.11v less,
so this is great but the only thing is when doing a manual overclock the voltage stays at 1.15v all the time and wont clock down in idle power saving states (it goes down to around 0.7v on idle).

The thing is normally i would wack it on adaptive voltage settings with 1.15 as the max and it would clock down just fine, but atleast with my asus z97 board adaptive voltage can only be used for additional voltage such as with overclocking, meaning that 1.15v is not additional to the stock 1.26, therefore it doesnt work! Ive tested it many times and in an overclocking state for example 1.28v at 4.6ghz the adaptive voltage works fine, but trying to underclock it down to 1.15 or 1.2v etc... it automatically reverts back to the stock 1.26v.

So i have given up on adaptive for underclocking, instead i have decided to use offset voltage settings, as with this giving a negative offset to my base voltage will work just fine, and currently i have a negative 0.06 offset to my base which brings me to 1.2v under load and then automatically downclocks on idle, the only problem is as you may have noticed a 0.06 negative offset only gets me to 1.2v when i know my cpu can run at 1.15, well what ive been getting to is that offset voltage affects all voltages the cpu clocks to including the bottom idle clock which was about 0.7v, its now 0.64v... and my system is fine, however if i do a negative 0.11v offset voltage which would take my load voltage to 0.15 my idle voltage is reduced too far below stock 0.7v that my pc will not boot!

So i must ask does anyone know a way in which i can undervolt my cpu from 1.26v to around 1.15v, whilst still benefiting from intels low voltage idle states, but not affecting the base idle clock too much so that my system wont boot such as im experiencing with a negative offset currently.

I figured there must be a way but havent had any luck yet so any help would be great thanks.

Im in the same boat, I'v set my offset to -0.015 and reduced adaptive to 1.165 which = 1.155 adaptive voltage. At full load (4.6ghz) draws 1.195 volts and may spike to 1.205 volts. Adaptive still works in lowwering the voltage but only slightly, the biggest canges come with adjusting the -offset but as you say, getting close to the edge of minimum -offset. Im not at my workstation at the moment but was wondering if you go into windows power plan (ballanced) an raise the cpu state to 20% from 5%, would this help in preventing voltage from dropping too low seeing as how the clocks would not drop to idle as much. Don't know will have to see when I get home.
