Unidentified Network / Limited Access / Can't find Default Gateway

Hi,

yesterday I went for lunch, came back to my PC having froze, turn it of and on again and since then I have not been able to get Wired Internet Connection.

I can connect to the internet via WiFi on my laptop, iPad, Phone and can also connect to the internet via wire on my laptop also.

I have followed about 5000 tutorials on how to 'fix' this problem with no luck at all. I have entered all the information such as IP etc manually, I have sorted bonjour out. I have troubleshot to the extreme.

I had the error of it windows not assigning an IP address, after entering it manually I now just don't have a default gateway anymore.

Can anyone help me with this problem? I'm fairly stupid in computers in regards to this kind of stuff. Its fairly important as I run all business' of this computer and would love to get it back ASAP.

Would a clean reinstall of windows8 fix this problem ? I don't really want todo that, As how annoying the initial install of it was.

It's one of life's more aggravating problems but you might find a missing Registry entry is the fault. Press your windows key and R together and into the Open box, type regedit then press Enter. From the File menu, choose Export then note the name and location of the backup you're about to create before you make any changes to the Registry. It probably won't be necessary later but it's good practice to back it up.

Next, navigate to H_KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock\Parameters then under Transports in the right-hand pane, ,if you don't see an entry for NetBios, click to Modify and add it in the list. While you're there, enter RFCOMM as well to cure any Bluetooth problems.

Leave the Registry from the File>Exit menu then restart the computer and see iff that made a difference.

Thanks for the response. I have just completed this and it hasn't seemed to change anything. It still can not identify the network, and nothing seemed to change after the restart was done either.

After doing this I ran a troubleshoot while it auto assigned an IP and the error was "Ethernet" doesn't have a valid IP configuration. When I input the IP manually the error is "Trouble shooting couldn't identify the problem. Then there is no real help involved.

At all times the Ethernet is always on an "Unidentified network with Limited Access"

The situation is fairly annoying as it seems no matter what I am todo the problem just kind of stays the same, or alternates between several responses.

Any other techniques ideas?

You should look for your PCs LAN driver on your PC manufacturer's website via your laptop. Once you find and download the driver, put it on a flash drive.

Open device manager on the PC in question by right clicking in the bottom left hand corner, or holding X and pressing the Windows key.

In the device manager window, open the drop down menu for Network Adapters. The one you want will be labeled as a LAN or Ethernet adapter. Right click it, and select uninstall.

Now we need to remove left over registry values. The easiest way to do this is using a program like CCleaner, which you can download from Piriform here. Put the installer on the flash drive as well, and then transfer both files to the PC.

Once you have CCleaner installed, open it and navigate to the registry tab. Run a scan and correct all the issues found. You can save a backup of the registry if you're hesitant.

Now reboot your PC. When it turns on again, open the folder with the LAN driver inside and run the installer. It might prompt you to reboot again when it's done. Once installed though, it should work again.

My PC is custom built by a friend about 8months ago, So I have no idea what the LAN card is.. Is there a way to find it out? If so how?

I have CCleaner on my PC already so thats all good.

Have a look in Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services and post back any which are Disabled. Someone will advise which to change to Automatic and restart.to restart

If you do not have a dedicated LAN card for gaming, what motherboard do you have? You can check this by right clicking the bottom left corner and selecting "Run." In the little box that pops up, type "msinfo32.exe" without the quotes and click OK. Under System Summary, the heading you are looking for is "System Model."

Under system summary - System model.. It says "To be filled by O.E.M"

I reinstalled Windows8, and the problem still happens.. This is really starting to irritate me.

Go to Control Panel>Device Manager and scroll to network Adapters. Click te + sign to expand it and right click the Ethernet adapter and ggo to Properties then Details. Scroll to HardwareIDs and note the four characters after VEN for Vendor and DEV for Device.

You need to take that information to http://www.pcidatabase.com and enter the DEV into the lower of the two input boxes. In the list that shows, look for the correct VENdor. When you find the list of that Vendors drivers use your browser's Find facility (Edit menu usually) to save scrolling through the lot. Enter in the DEVice detail and you should find a direct link to the website for the right driver.

Any problems, post the VEN and DEV details back here.

I have installed the new driver, but its not doing anything. I am still having the same problems with the internet that I had since it started, after doing all of these things, plus more. I even clean install windows 8, and the same thing is happening. After updating drivers also.

Ok something just happened.. I am connected to the network now, before it was Limited, Identifying network. Now it has the network, its just limited connectivity.

Open a command window as Administrator by right clicking on the filename cmd.exe in Windows\system32 and selecting RunAs Administrator. At the prompt, type ipconfig /flushdns then press Enter.

After getting confirmation, type the following including any spaces:-
netsh winsock reset catalog
then press Enter again. Type exit to leave the command form and restart the computer - twice.

Any better?

Still now working, can't install windows 7 either because don't have DVD drive, and its not liking my FlashDrive.

I don't think a change of OS would help - it worked briefly proving it can so it remains only a need to find out why it isn't consistent.

A few things to try:- if you have a spare ethernet cable, try replacing the existing one. Uninstall the NIC in Device Manager then restart allowing the system to reinstall it. Disable it first in Network and Sharing Centre. If you haven't already done so, allocate a manual address instead of letting DHCP do it. Check that there's a tick in Control Panel>Internet Options>Connections tab>LAN button in the "Automatically detect settings" box and that there are none in the Proxy boxes below that.

Spungeh's case is a particularly odd one. Have you tried the fixes I suggested?

Spungeh - when you reinstalled W8, did you stick with the new NIC driver you found at PCI Database?

He could quite possibly be blacklisted from network access via IP or MAC address. About the only thing left I could think of. If all above suggestions didn't work out - try doing a factory reset on the modem, or contact the network admin to have him investigate the possibility.

I was able to Solve this issue.

Background: After fresh Windows 8.1 Pro install on my Laptop it couldn´t connect via WLAN to my Router Airport EXTREME Base Station 802.11n, though I COULD connect via LAN. Every other single device in my home could establish a succesfull connection via WLAN to the Router. Also, my Laptop could aquire a succesfull connection with any other given router save for a spare Airport EXPRESS Base Station 802.11n. I tried Ubuntu Live CD on my Laptop and worked like charm with the Airport EXTREME. Previously, under Windows 7 Ultimate I didn´t have ANY trouble whatsoever with my setup. I ended trying EVERYTHING & troubleshooted through every sigle bit of info available on the web with no success (Including all the advice offered in this very topic). My WLAN adapter is a Combo Broadcomm 802.11b/g/n with Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR.

Solution; As it turned out, with a little bit of luck and tryout, I changed the Wireless Channels from Automatic to Manual via Airport Utility (Channel 5 for 2.4 GHtz and 157 for 5 GHtz, chosen arbitrairly) and BOOOM!!! The Nightmare ended for me
