I will be installing a new cooler later on today and was wondering if i needed to unlatch my CPU when cleaning off the old thermal compound. I will be using 99% isopropyl alcohol and white coffee filters. My CPU is an i5 3570k socketed in a msi Z77A-GD80 if that makes any difference.

Solution
I usually wont unlatch it unless i have to, those pins in the socket can be very fragile. Dab the alcohol on the coffee filters and wipe dont pour.

Will do, thanks for the help.

No one probably cares but I would call it a success. I just got done doing tests and my temps are down over 15 degrees at load with the NT-H1 paste and the Noctua NH-U12S. So thanks to everyone who helped me!
