Unstable system/programs

When trying to update video drivers or play a game, my system will either shutdown the program, restart, or just lock up. I dont have a virus that I can find. I have defraged my drives and ran a scandisk. I am running out of ideas. Any ideas are more then wellcome.

Sorry new to this. mb asus a7n8x-e deluxe. cpu AMD XP 2600+ not overclocked. Bus speed 266. Vid card ATI All in Wonder 9800 pro. 768 m/b ram win xp pro. Any other system info needed??

Also would help if you look under the event logs for any errors, either in application log or system logs. Find logs right click on my computer and click on Manage expand event viewer. Also to get more detail look at your computer system information which is located under > Program > Accessories > System Tools > System Information. You can export the list to a txt file and copy and paste to this post. PSU = Power Supply Units.

Reset BIOS. Pull all memory sticks out, put one in. Run PC. If you have different video card, put it in. Do you run onboard sound, if so, disable it and see if it still locks up. Have you ran PC fine before, if so, when did it start to lockup? There is definatly something in hardware drivers that coasing this. Yeah, before you do anything, disable your LAN card, my guess is that you run one on board, so do it in BIOS.

PS: It is not a big deal to find what is coasing the problem, you just have to play with it for a bit. If you want to SAVE yourself time, reinstall windows first, see if that will solve driver issue (I hope it will😉

Thanks, figured it out. It was a combo of running hot, bad install of video and lan drivers. I was in a hurry when I installed them so I didnt take my time then. I guess that will teach me. the fedex guy will be droping off a Cooler Master Jet 7, that should help running hot. I reinstalled the video and lan drivers and so far so good. If it still locks up then I will follow the rest of your ideas. Thanks again!

Thanks. I spent a lot of time trying to find the best parts for my price range. I also have to thank my wife for letting me spend a good chunk of cash to get what I have. I think the only thing I realy "need" now is faster ram.

She was actualy realy nice about it. She knew I wanted a DVD burner for my B-day. So she took $5 out of her tips, (she works at Village Inn, helping me get through school) everyday and saved it over 3 or so months, with out telling me. So when I finaly found out that she was saving the money and where it was, ther was about $350 in there. I had a bit of a spending spree. She let me upgrade the CPU and MB the DVD burner and later got the 9800pro. I have a lot of left over parts and she wants me to build her a system soon too. Maybe it is because we have been married less then a year, but as far as buying computer parts, I have a realy nice wife!

Right now if you have any of that 350 left over I recommend you take her out to dinner or do something really romantic.
