Unsure of compatibility of old processor and motherboard

Hi, this is my first computer I'm building and I'm trying to use a old xeon E5540, and the SuperMicro X8DTL-3F Rev2 Server Mother Board Dual LGA 1366 Socket DDR3 PCI-E x16. The socket type matches but there is one problem I know of, on the motherboard website it says "Intel® Xeon® processor 5600/5500 series, with QPI up to 6.4 GT/s
Intel® 5500 (Tylersburg) Chipset" The thing is that I don't know how to find out if my processer is compatible. Any answers would help or a new motherboard/processor format (I want to build this out of old server parts to keep the cost down.) Thanks.

To summarize, though:
-- "5500" series were based on the Nehalem (1st-generation Core i) series, & were called "Gainestown" in the Xeon line. That would be chips like the E5502/5503 (2C/2T), E5504/5506/5507 (4C/4T), E5520/5530/5540 (4C/8T), X5550/5560/5570 (4C/8T), W5580/5590 (4C/8T), & some other low-voltage models (have "L" in the front). There were also the "Jasper Forest" CPUs (have "EC" on the front), but they seemed to be clocked lower.
-- "5600' series were based on the Westmere (2nd-generation Core i/Sandy Bridge) architecture, & were called "Westmere-EP" in the Xeon line. Your applicable CPUs would be the X5698 (2C/2C), E5603/5606/5607 (4C/4T)...

If your CPUs aren't listed, they're not going to be compatible. If you can, I would go for the 6C/12T ones if possible, or at least settle for a 4C/8T model.

EDIT: well, that will teach me to read better. You mentioned the E5540, which is on the list...so they should work just fine.
