I want to update my Dell xps 8300 bios form A06 (2011), to A06 (mar 2016). When I download it and try to update my current bios, it says "system has current version". "this may be an older version, do I wish to install?" I said no, and got out. Why wont the "TR-A06.QS.exe load, it is an update to my 2011 bios A06, and I got it from the dell website. Thanks

Solution

Very few people need more than an i5, an i7 is used mainly where you need a lot of CPU work like video editing and rendering, even then the cost is often not worth it unless you do it for a job. There are also some cases where large calculations in Excel and other programs can be done a lot faster with an i7 CPU, but again that is in the professional realm of things.

For a general use system for games and non-pro editing work, I'd get an i5-6500 CPU. K models are fast and can be overclocked easily...
If you have the A06 BIOS, you have the latest one for that system. The date is not the BIOS release date, the BIOS came out in 2011, not sure where you got the 2016 date from, but it may have been for an updated readme file, not the BIOS file.

A newer BIOS would be A07, not A06 with a different date.

Thanks for your prompt reply. I got the information from"ZOTAC", see below, they said I must download the latest (mar) A06 to use the graphics card. I'm in the middle as always from suppliers. Just want to make sure I can use this graphics card. Maybe you can pass it along to the "graphics area". Thanks
I checked out my "panther" in windows for Callback_enviroment, and is shows "Bios", not UEFI.
from zotac, Nvidia card 750 ti:

The power supply is sufficient to run this card.

The card should run on your XPS, however if you are still on the older bios that may be the only limiting factor.

If you are on the 2011 bios you will need to upgrade to the 2014 bios,
http://downloads.dell.com/bios/TR-A06_QS.EXE

once you get the card installed and then install the driver, you will be good to go.

He is mistaken, The A06 BIOS is the version, not sure what he means by the 2014 BIOS, he may be talking about the "last updated" time, which is not the BIOS file but for the documentation that goes with it.

There is a newer A07 BIOS available, but not directly from DELL as a download. It may not resolve any issues with video card compatibility though, you may need a different firmware flashed onto the video card for that.

Read here http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/software-os/f/3524/t/19478719, third post from the bottom had directions how to get the A07 version from the A06 download. Further in the post are some comments about video cards working or not.

That's what I thought also, wouldn't it be lets say an "A07" update to "A06"? I thought A06 was the latest, do you think the 750 TI would work with my "BIOS" A06? I don't think zotac got that correctly either. I want to update my graphics card (HD) to something better with 2-4 DDR5 memory on board, yet low in power supply consumption. My 5770 doesn't respond all the time.

Also, If I decide to get a new computer after all of this, what is the difference between an I7-6700K and I7 5820K CPU, also difference in Gigabyte X99-UD4 and Z170-HD3P mother board. I really don't think I need more then I7-6700K.

About the card running on your existing BIOS, I can't say, don't have one of those cards to try, or a Dell XPS.

Solution
looking from this if a 900 card works on a06 then that 700 card should even more easy?

http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3515/t/19602975

like the xps 8700 dell had to release a new bois [A10 ] for 900 card support cause they did not work on older bios with them

http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3515/t/19601491?pi21953=1

thing is with a prebuilt you do all this at your own risk anyway there only guaranteed to work as sold by dell with what they authorized to be used on them and that's all there going to stand behind anyway when the chips are down

good luck

I do a lot of video editing and a lot of pictures also to make DVD's for people. Require a powerful card and 4 gig of memory. My computer locked up again last night, sometimes I wonder if it not the P.S. Getting closer to getting a new computer, just wanted to invest about $100 for video card to see if that was the problem first. Thanks again for your answers.
