So I know I've been asking around a lot about this but my heart is set on two options:

i7 4770 (non k) + MSI H97 Gaming 3 Motherboard

Or

i5 4460 + Gigabyte GA-Z97X-Gaming 3 Motherboard + Corsair HS30 (Free) + 8GB TridentX 2400Mhz RAM

Or

This will be for gaming/recording and photoshop/aftereffects. I rarely edit my videos.

My current specs:

AMD Athlon x4 760k Black Edition @ 3.8Ghz
MSI Radeon R9 270 2GB Gaming Edition OC'd
MSI A78M-E35
500w EVGA PSU
500GB HDD
Zalman Z3 Plus Mid-Tower Case

Cheers

Bear in mind that I only have 4GB of ram right now, will that hold me back?

if you get the non K you dont need Z chipset motherboard. So if you get the i5 you can use the H97. For gaming, the difference between i5 and i7 is little. Only games that support and use multi-threading will benefit from i7, for example CryEngine (dead?) and Frostbite Engine, for other games they rarely use additional threads that i7 has, in other wordsm i7 is MORE futureproof, as engine getting better multi-threaded support. For productivity ofc i7 will be better because editing videos and images are massively parallel/multithreaded, by how much I don't know, maybe google up some benchmark in productivity might help you

What ram do you currently have? Do you own a headset?

The reason I chose the Z97 board is due to two reasons:

It's cheaper than most of the H97 boards on the website
It's handy if I decided to upgrade my CPU to a K edition later in the year, which is very likely. Plus the Z97 will allow me to upgrade to the broadwell chips when they release.

Most of the latest games like Watch Dogs expect 8 GB of RAM.

If you are able to afford one more 4 GB DDR3 chip (1600 Mhz), 20-30% stuttering in games can be thrown out.

I only have 4GB DDR3 ram at 1333Mhz.

I have all the gaming gear I need.

This fact is eye-catchy for me. I was thinking about Xeon processors for quite sometime. Will it be a good thing for me if I upgrade my 4670 to xeon e1230?... just being curious on it.

Then the ram may be appealing but the HS30 is a non-starter. Both CPUs would be more than enough for gaming and there's not a lot between the mobos.

Get the i7 and see if you can upgrade your ram at some point

The Xeon isn't cheaper than the i7 here, in fact it's marginally more expensive than the CPU I listed.

The HS30 comes free with the motherboard. I've been using my current PC for photoshop etc and it's not held me back too much but the main reason I would like to upgrade is because my CPU is overheating too much and is holding me back in games.

then get the Z chipset on the i7 build too -_- and also why not save some more and get the 4690k/4790k? it's woth the wait...

My budget is £300, the i7 is £220 and the motherboard is £100
