Updating bios without reformatting?

So I want to update the bios on my m5a99fx pro r2.0 but I'm unsure of the procedure to do so.

The main question i'm getting at is do I have to reformat my hdd during a mobo bios update? Or can I simply update the bios via usb and everything will be left the same as before the update?

Firo40 is right. Just don't update BIOS for the heck of it. Only ever update BIOS if you're actually having hardware problems.

I feel like my hardware is being held back from the revision. Is that a good enough reason?

If you have a reason by all means go for it! All I'm saying is don't just do it because you're bored and looking to kill time 😛
