My PC is in need of an update (used for gaming and photo editing), think I built it back in 2017…

Hi! Having signed for for XBOX game pass for PC to play Forza I'm noticing my PC struggling a little and crashing occassionaly during the game. I want to upgrade it a notch and need advice on best way pls.
Currently have:
Ryzen 5 2600
Arctic freeZer e33 cooler
GeForce GTX 1060 6Gb OC GPU
MSI B450 tomahawk mobo
16Gb DDR4 RAM 3000MHz RAM x 2
750W seasonic PSU
Acer nitro monitor (240Hz, 1ms)

Playing Fortnite for example I’m getting:
GPU: 67C, 100%, 1936Mhz,
MEM: 4007 MhZ
~50-60fps.
Everything’s up to date.

looking at spending less than 700 bucks. Thanks

You need to work out why that game crashes now. There is no reason you should expect it to crash. For example it could be a psu issue, you could change cpu, motherboard & RAM and still have issues. I’d try and fix your current system.

Have you tried a fresh install of Windows to rule out a software problem? Have you tried removing the gpu driver with DDU and then installing the latest driver?

Thanks so much, have now seen that the 5600 is a significant upgrade so will start there.
The 5600X that is, sure you mean it, but the 5600g is there too.

Think the upgrade is firstly about performance, but it's good to keep an eye on this.

Thanks, yes I’m not getting crashes (since I overclocked a little, this was only with Forza 5), its FPS dips that were becoming annoying. Some other expenses have popped up so as I can realistically only upgrade 1 component right now it seems best to do the CPU.

Fortnite seems to depend on only a couple of fast cores:
https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/fortnite-best-performance-benchmarks,5541-6.html
To assess how good your single thread performance is, run the cpu-Z bench test.
You should score about 424.
Upgrading to a $260 r5-5600x should give you 643:
https://valid.x86.fr/bench/rsf5p1/1
Ryzen depends on fast ram for performance, hence the 3600 speed suggested earlier.
A 2 x 16gb 3600 speed kit will be about $125.

As an alternative, consider the $210 Intel 12th gen i5-12400 processor
It has a better single thread rating of 702:
http://valid.x86.fr/bench/0gt9vb/1
A B660 DDR4 based motherboard will be in the $100-$150 range.
Intel does not depend on ram for performance so you can reuse your current ram.

Thanks, I did think about a fresh install but haven’t had the time.

That is old info and not right anymore.

Anyway, he already has the ram and the motherboard, just a cpu will be fine, the 3000mhz ram won't be that much of a "bottleneck" compared to 3600mhz ram.

One other thing, if you talk about the i5 12400 at least link a 12400 review with it.

Could you point me to a good ram speed scaling test for current intel processors?
Here is one I found, but it looks like sort of a cursory attempt to me.
Last I knew, ram speed was only important for the integrated graphics.

And, good catch on the review, I posted the wrong one, the post has been corrected.

AMD vs Intel,In both same games so you can compare how they stack up against each other and how different speeds help in those games

What ram is this exactly? Looking for partnr, you can look with cpu-z in the spd tab or do the next,

download hwinfo,
install and open it=click run,
close the top window which is the system summary,
in the main window at the left top click "save report",
at the bottom of the next window check "Summary for Clipboard",
after that you'll see what's in the pc,
copy by clicking "copy to clipboard" and rightclick+paste in your next respons

Oldest bios that this motherboard comes with, you should really update that.

3000mhz ram, but with CAS15 is not bad, would just leave it in and if you are into it see if you can overclock it.

Have seen these before, is some virtual disk, think has to do with XBOX. One link about what it might be and how to get rid of it.

We signed up for xbox live recently, will look at the links thanks very much!
