Upgrade from Radeon 5770 CX to 7850 worth it?

HI!

I'm an avid gamer and since I've been using 2 CrossFire Radeon HD 5770's for my graphics solution (which at the time cost around £300 X_X).

I've been running into a plethora of visual problems like visual tearing, stuttering and v-sync not working properly whilst playing games and the help forums frequently say they're working on a patch for CrossFire GPU set-ups.

It was my birthday last week and I'm considering biting the bullet and moving over to a single card 2GB GPU like the Radeon 7850 (has to be ATI).

Long story short, is the upgrade from the 2 Radeon 5770's to the Radeon 7850 worth the ~£140?

Yes as a 7850 is vastly more powerful in almost everything except for bitcoin mining but everything else there is great gains.

I would say on a graphic level yes the 7850 is a vast improvement on the 5770. However with that being said your system also needs to be taken into account the age of it and what your processor is. If your system is to old it may not be a optimal choice for you.

His system had two 5770 so it being able to manage a single 7850 is fairly certain as the combined power consumption of two 5770 is greater than most stock clocked 7850.

I think he was more asking about CPU and ram... Thinking they might be a big limiting factor in his gaming experience.

Correct Derza you are correct. Two 5770's would still not equate to a 7850 at this time.

If we look at the Graphics Hierarchy by Tomshardware, then it would mean you'd move 4 tiers up if upgrading to the 7850. Tomshardware at least recommends that you jump 3 tiers within every upgrade, to see significant performance difference. So I'd say it'd be a worthy upgrade.

That is a very thought out assessment I think most jump within 2 generations but certainly 3 would be the you should jump point.

But yes the 7850 would really destroy the 5770 in every way. So I would say it is a safe upgrade for you within that price range if AMD was the brand you wanted to go with.

Yea you should be just fine 7850 for you sir or a gtx660 both are comparable to one another.

the old GPUs doesn't scale so well in crossfire.

They don't normally place mutiple gpu configurations into there charts they do with the 7990 and the 690 which I don't agree with them doing. You are making quite a jump if its anything in the 7850-7970 range or the 660-680 range.

its far better, you will notice much smoother gameplay. Even if the 5770's benchmarked equal or slightly better, you would still get smoother gameplay with single 7850, far less microstuttering. just to give you some perspective, i went from crossfire 6850's to a single gtx660, which benchmark about the same, but gameplay is far smoother on the gtx660 and its much faster in scenario's where the 1gb vram of the 6850's was overloaded, many new games will use more than 1gb now.

I know! Almost every game I load up I'd start with having my PC in CrossFire and turn it off immediately, the games just run better with one card Guess that second 5770 was a huge waste of money.
